How To Sleep Better
Get Into a Good Sleeping Schedule
What do I mean by this? Well you should know! When I was at college, I’d often be in at really weird times. Sometimes I’d be in at 9am and other days I wouldn’t start till 4pm! So instead of doing what I should have done, I ended up staying up real late on the days I wasn’t in till late, and when I tried to get up for the 9am lectures, I couldn’t because I wasn’t tired the night before.
You need to aim to go to bed at the same time each night, and get up around the same time each day. Sounds kinda obvious but it’s something I neglected to do for 5 years and this was when my sleeping pattern was CRAZY.
Watch What You’re Eating and Drinking at Night
Again, sounds simply but I bet you’re doing this too! When I was at college, I’d often have a bottle of coke by my bed and have a massive meal only 2 or so hours before bed. What an idiot! Caffeine is just the anti-sleep drug. Even if you have caffeine within 8 hours of going to bed it still has an effect, so watch the food and drink you’re having in the evening.
If you are hungry, then avoid having a big meal. Instead, have something like a turkey sandwich, a banana or some cereal.
How Much Sleep Do We Need Anyway?
People learning how to sleep better often want to know the best amount of time that they need to be asleep for. Well if you’re an adult, then you should aim to get between 7.5 and 9 hours of sleep a night. In fact, due to the way our body goes through 90 minute sleep cycles, you’ll wake up more refreshed by getting 7.5 hours sleep than 8 hours!
